Parks and Recreation
Spartanburg was named one of the 31 founding cities by the Playful City USA initiative, for its long-range goal accomplishments for parks and recreation. Today Spartanburg offers over 20 area parks, five recreational facilities, a swim center and over 100 miles of hiking and bike trails. Spartanburg is home to over 87 miles of local bicycling routes, and is the first place in South Carolina to receive designation as a Bicycle-Friendly Community by the League of American Bicyclists.
Spartanburg has it's own outdoor leadership school located in Glendale, just 10 minutes from downtown. Glendale Outdoor Leadership School has an indoor rock climbing wall, mountain bike and kayak facility and also offers wilderness and leadership training for individuals of all ages and abilities. The facility is an excellent place to meet other outdoor and environmental enthusiasts and learn more information about all the outdoor recreation locations in Spartanburg.
