The Advent Shoppe
The Advent Shoppe, a ministry of the Church of the Advent, since November of 2008, is located in Satterlee Hall next to the Church. Bill Hunter, manager of the Shoppe, explained that it is staffed by volunteers and all profits go to Community Outreach.
The Shoppe is unique not only in the assortment of merchandise, but it is one of two alliance stores of Ten Thousand Villages, in South Carolina. Ten Thousand Villages, a ministry of the Mennonite Church, is a nonprofit program that provides fair income to Third World people by marketing their handicrafts and telling their stories in North America. These artisans would otherwise be unemployed or underemployed. The Shoppe showcases exclusive handmade gift items, handbags, and jewelry from these artisans.
Ours exclusively in the Upstate is skin care products from Thistle Farms. Thistle Farms is the social enterprise that is run by the women of Magdalene, at Vanderbilt University. By hand, the women create natural bath and body products that are as good for the earth as they are for the body. Purchases of Thistle Farms products directly benefit the women who made them. - A non-profit business (paid for by grants and private donations) operated by women who have survived lives of violence and abuse.
There are handmade crafts from artists of the Southern Highlands Craft Guild, Local food products, from Bull Hogs Barbeque Sauce to Advent Blend coffee from Little River Roasting. Unique greeting cards and gifts for all occasions. Truly a destination place to shop.
